The Floral Pavilion stands out for its unique design and construction. The structure, measuring 6 meters in height and 15 meters in diameter, is a hemispheric dome supported by 24 pieces of wooden frame structure. It is clad with 120 perforated plywood panels, each pierced with the geometry of traditional Islamic carpet patterns. The pavilion, providing 177m2 shelter at the Al Majaz Waterfront, Sharjah, was erected with 2 layers of 9mm plywood and finished with texture paint.
The design team, comprising Mr. Chan Pui Hong, Aden, Mr. Chung Chiu Shan, Tidus, and Ms. Lo Wai, Ciara, faced the challenge of constructing the Floral Pavilion within a short period of time. Effective communication and coordination with the local UAE construction team were crucial to the successful completion of the project. The team even visited the factory in Dubai to ensure every detail was executed to expectation.
The Floral Pavilion is not just a structure; it is an interactive installation. During the day, sunlight projects the pattern on the ground, transforming the shadow into a carpet that shifts with the sun's movements. In the evening, LED floodlights delineate the patterns, creating a twinkling sky for visitors to appreciate the beauty of Islamic carpet patterns.
The design of the Floral Pavilion was inspired by the Islamic carpet, specifically the Tabriz carpet from Iran, known for its quality design, technique, and skill. The design team conducted in-depth research on the carpet's patterns and its evolution, which helped them extract the geometry of traditional Islamic Carpet to form the hemispherical dome.
The Floral Pavilion was displayed at the Al Majaz Waterfront, Sharjah from 13th December 2017 to 23rd January 2018. It was awarded Silver in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2018, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation. The copyright for the design belongs to Daydreamers Design Limited, 2018.
In conclusion, the Floral Pavilion is a unique blend of art, architecture, and culture. It is a testament to the influence of Islamic art on the world and the innovative approach of Daydreamers Design. The pavilion not only served as an anchor installation at the Islamic Arts Festival 2017 but also continues to be a symbol of the fusion of traditional Islamic art with modern design and technology.
